Simple tips for a killer Board CV.

This is the time of year when so many of us start thinking about what we want this year to be. New goals, maybe finally taking action on a goal we've had for a while, thinking about how and why we want to make big changes in our career, such as joining a Board.

As a board member, you are seen as an expert in your field. When you join a board of directors, you gain visibility and recognition in your community and industry. And you get a sense of real satisfaction, sharing the wisdom and experience you've garnered over the years.

My tips for an awesome Board CV:

If this sounds like you or your boss, then here are some high-level tips to remember:

  • Your Board CV is different to your Exec CV. Boards are about oversight and strategic guidance. Your Exec CV will be capturing your achievements based on what you've done and managed, so resist the urge to use your standard CV for board opportunities.

  • Your front page is your powerhouse: think of it like a magazine cover, it needs to sell you in quickly and easily.

  • Keep it short and punchy - 3 pages max with plenty of white space.

  • Your intro - or governance profile - should be hard-hitting and summarise you style and contribution clearly and distinctly.

  • Your Board CV needs to be truly aligned with the roles and opportunities you are seeking.
